The Mosquito Problem

Whether its relaxing at the pool, barbecuing in the backyard or patio time with friends, no one likes it when mosquitoes crash the party. Not only are mosquitoes an annoying nuisance but they are also vectors for diseases such as zika, malaria and chikungunya. Although mosquitoes are a flying pest, meaning they could be coming from the neighbors house down the street, there is much that can be done to reduce mosquito problems around your house.

The First Step

The first step in getting mosquitoes out of your yard is to recognize why they are there in the first place. Apart from seeing you as a delicious meal, there are two factors that attract mosquitoes to your yard, nesting and resting sites.

Nesting Sites

Mosquito larvae are aquatic, meaning every species of mosquito lay their eggs in water. Although preferred nesting water sources differ among mosquito species, a good start to a mosquito control program begins with eliminating potential breeding sites around your home. You should know, a mosquito can develop from egg to adult in just a thimble-full of water….meaning it doesn’t take much water build up to attract them. This image and the following action list include the first steps a homeowner can take to remove potential breeding sites.

  1. Clean up debris around the home. Texas clayey soil easily stays damp under piles of leaves, boards and a hodgepodge of outdoor items.

  2. Scan the yard for items that may hold water. Pots, cans, bird baths, lids, kids toys and even the dish under planter pots.

  3. Clean out gutters and check for correct drainage. Make sure to watch out for sagging gutters or low spots where water can pool.

  4. Yards with poor drainage will accumulate water, consider options to level your yard or install a french drain to improve drainage.

Resting Sites

Once matured, adults will rest in shady areas protected from the wind including trees, shrubs, potted plants, patios and front entryways. Many Texas suburb homes are built with 3 to 5 feet of grass between either side of the house and the surrounding fence. Areas such as this can provide great little harbor sites for mosquitoes until their next meal walks through the gate.

Green Pest Guys Can Help!

Although there are ways to reduce nesting sites around a home it is impractical to tear out all foliage in the name of mosquito control and there will always be a place for them to rest around the home. That is where a Green Pest Guys Mosquito Treatment comes in!

Your Green Pest Guys technician will inspect your yard looking for the factors that are bringing the mosquitoes to your space. If there are ways that mosquito nesting sites can be prevented don’t be surprised if the technician offers suggestions. Nesting sites that can’t be remediated, low spots in the yards or permanent water-collecting fixtures can be treated with safe, biological control methods to prevent mosquito development.

Next, your Green Pest Guy will treat potential mosquito resting and nesting sites. This treatment may look like a fine mist coming out of a backpack fogger, a spray application from a backpack or hose, and/or a simple pot placed in areas of high activity. Common nesting spots found during the inspection will be targeted with your safety in mind. Our organic and botanical based products have a triple action effect: killing the adult mosquitoes, preventing mosquitoes from breeding and repelling mosquitoes from your yard. Since every yard and the weather above it is different, the effectiveness and longevity of the treatments will also differ. Cooperative homeowners typically see great results for 1 to 2 months. The frequency of our treatments depends on your preferences and layout of the yard.
