Visual Description: slender, long-legged, winged insects with long, piercing mouthparts.
Size: 1/8″ – 1/4″ long
Habitat: Mosquito larvae are aquatic meaning the adults will stay within a few miles to a few hundred feet from a water source during its lifespan, depending on the species. Water sources range from saltwater marshes to anything bigger than a thimble left out on the side of your house. Once matured, adults will rest in shady areas protected from the wind including vegetation, patios and front entryways.
Food: Female mosquitoes require the protein from blood to reproduce. An average mosquito blood-meal can take 1-4 ml of blood which can be 2.5 times the mosquitoes unfed weight.
How did they get in my house?: Typical entry points are through windows or doorways especially as doors are pulled open bringing in outside air, and anything flying through it.
Reproduction: A single female mosquito may produce 500 to 5000 eggs in its lifetime, half of them being female. The entire development cycle, egg to adult, takes only 10 to 16 days.
Danger Level: Mosquito bites can cause itchy, red bumps. More than an outdoor nuisance, mosquitoes are a concern to public health as vectors for malaria, encephalitis, West Nile virus, yellow fever, chikungunya and zika.
